If you purchased an older home and realized it has termites, you need to contact a pest control company as soon as possible. This is not something you want to take care of yourself as it is important that they are all removed. This is because termites can cause structural damage. Keep reading to learn about different types of termites you may have and how a pest control company removes them.

Do a Complete Inspection

The first thing the pest control contractor will do is inspect your home. They need to know the type of termites you have before they develop a treatment plan.  There are subterranean termites, which you will find in most states. This termite likes moist areas and lives underground. They build mud tubes that lead from their nest to your home's foundation. There could be hundreds of thousands of termites living in the nest at one time. This is the most destructive termite you could have.

There are also Formosan termites, which are also dangerous and aggressive. They create huge colonies underground. They build mud nests inside the walls. Once you get these termites, they are difficult to remove and control. These termites can be found in the southern part of the United States.

Drywood termites build their nests in wooden walls or roofing shingles. They mostly go after dead wood. You may find them inside your home near any deteriorating wood. This type of termite is generally the easiest to remove and control by pest control companies. You can find these termites in the southern United States.

Remove Termites

If you have termites that live in the soil, such as the subterranean or Formosan termites, the pest control company treats the soil. They will put a barrier of termiticide around your property. They may dig a trench, put termiticide in the trench, and then fill the trench with soil.  The pest control contractor will also treat the soil near their colony. When a termite passes through the termiticide when traveling to your home they unknowingly bring the termiticide back to its nest.

If you have drywood termites the pest control company may fumigate the inside of your home. They may also use spot treatments using insecticides. Heat treatment is also sometimes used if treating your entire home. Because drywood termites hide in wood you will likely never see them.

A pest control contractor can give you much more information on how they remove termites.
